Team information

club or a team?

Why not both?

Currently, Sequoyah Cycling operates as a team within the Georgia Cycling Association (GCA). The GCA season runs April through November each year. Students of Sequoyah High School and Dean Rusk Middle School can race or hang out and ride – whatever you’re up for!

Beginning with the 2022-2023 school year, we also have an official Sequoyah High School club and are now hoping to expand to also have a Dean Rusk Middle School club. Watch for future club updates.

What to expect

Who can join?

Sequoyah Cycling is open to all Dean Rusk and Sequoyah High School students for the 2023/24 school year, even rising 6th graders! We accommodate riders of all skill levels and do not require tryouts.

What Will I need?

  • A geared mountain bike with 26″ or 29″ wheels
  • A properly-fitting bicycle helmet
  • Padded riding shorts (recommended)
  • Gloves (recommended)
  • Riding glasses (recommended)

Note: We will work with the kids on proper bike setup and maintenance but expect the bikes to be maintained and prepped before rides or practice. GCA has specific rules requiring handlebar end caps and restricting some accessories such as bar ends. Please check the GCA rulebook for details.

2023/24 Season Key dates

practices, Rides, & Races

Practices

The practice schedule has not yet been 100% finalized, but this is the intent.

  • Practice 3x per week (trying to avoid Friday)
  • Monday and Thursday practices will be combined with Blankets Creek Composite, Blankets Creek HomeSchool, and Woodstock High School teams
  • Third practice will be Sequoyah-specific
  • Practice locations will primarily be Rope Mill Park and Blankets Creek Trails. We’re coordinating with other teams to minimize overcrowding.
  • Adjustments will be made to the practices based on coaches’ experiences and Sequoyah Cycling team feedback.

Additional rides

We are planning to schedule 2 or 3 weekend fun rides before the race series begins in September.

Race Schedule

The first race will likely be in September. Check the Sequoyah team calendar or GCA calendar for a full schedule.

key changes for 2022

The state will be divided into a West and East Conference this season. Sequoyah will be in the West conference. All middle school and high school riders who participate in the race series will race on the same day. We will race FOUR regular season races this season, two on a Saturday and two on a Sunday. We hope that this will allow more student-athletes to try out racing.

High School race participants will have the opportunity to qualify to race in the Peach State Championship race which will be held at Kingston Downs. All riders will have the opportunity to participate in pre-rides and other GCA/team activities that weekend.
